Day 5. From Tranquil Resort, Sultans Battery to Ooty

This morning we left Tranquil Resort at 8.30am and headed for Ooty which is in the Nilgiry Hills (a tea growing area) about 7,000 ft above sea level. The road is narrow and very bendy so after a couple of hours we stopped for a break at a small roadside cafe. Again we caused a bit of a stir when we asked for Masala Chai – but we're becoming accustomed to that now.

Back on the road again and we managed another hour before I had to ask our driver to stop so we could get out and stretch our legs – we were both feeling a bit queasy. I remember this happened when we made our previous visit to a hillside station but we were on a coach then and didn't have the option to take breaks. Anyway, Joshi stopped so we could watch the ladies picking/bagging up the leaves they'd picked








then we made one last stop as I wanted to take a closer look at a little shanty village next to a large field and lake which had dozens of cows and horses grazing together.

As poor as this Town was, it had its own little temple

    It's quite surprising to me how many of the people are happy to be photographed. I'm guessing they don't speak English and your guide interprets for you.

    The tea plantation ladies don't speak English so we just gesture with the cameras and ask their permission. A couple didn't want photos taken so of course we respect that.
    Our driver interprets at the Chai stops where the Indians don't speak English but most people in the towns do speak English - some just a few words and others very well .... although the accents often make it hard to understand them at first

Kerala Part I – Churches & Chinese Fishing Nets

Cochin or Kochi as its now known – Kerala (Southern India) 11 of us from the original tour group are now 'down South' and have been joined by 4 other people who flew in yesterday via Dubai. Mum and Daughter and Husband & wife so we are now 15. Wow … very hot (and steamy) and very different from Delhi/Agra/Jaipur etc. First impressions are that this area is much wealthier than the Northern States. Quieter – still some horn blowing on the roads but road users do seem to follow some rules. The hawkers (touts) are far less aggressive and actually take NO for an answer LOL. Cochin also seems to have lots and lots of churches, mosques, convents and also cemeteries/graveyards – something we saw little of in the North. Many of the lorries and boats are named after Saints or have Religious quotes signpainted on them. We took a coach ride today to visit St Francis Church which is supposed to be the first European Church to be built in India c1500AD. Built originally by...

Farewell, Mumbai

When David checked in online for our BA flights he found that all the window seats had been taken (apparently) which was disappointing Then when we checked our bags at the airport we were given different seats to those offered online and we were told the plane had been changed (to a larger one we believe) but still we were given one aisle and one end of centre row seats. David suggested upgrading but then found out that the cost was an additional £400 each so changed his mind rather hastily. I said what a shame it was that we weren't getting good seats, unlike on our outward journey which was excellent and the very nice young man winked and said 'I'll see what I can do' ... lo & behold we got window and adjoining seat! I was able to take photos as we departed showing just how close the slums are to the runways at the airport ... There were so many spare seats in our Premium Economy section that we were able to spread out and we had a really great flight back.    ...
